When Bob Marley sang about ‘so much trouble in the world’ I’m fairly certain not even he could have envisaged quite how much trouble that same world is in now.
As we enter this period of reflection – irrespective of your beliefs – we can all surely conclude that the tired old message about ‘peace on earth’ needs to be woken up and told to do something with its life.
As it is, people across this fragile planet are smashing the smithereens out of each other. Often the premise for these explosive rows seems a little bit flimsy but, of course, that is enduringly symptomatic of the wider human condition. Arguing is what we do best.
The human condition is something the life sciences knows something about. Now, I’m not daft enough to think that our industry is perfect – it is well documented that it is not. But it is not well documented enough that the motivation across much of pharma is goodwill and, indeed, peace on earth.
When a therapy is being developed the innovators of that medicine, the developers of that life-transforming drug, don’t do it for kings, or the aristocracy or Elon Musk. It is created for humankind and everyone in it. After all, diseases don’t care who you are and, thus, treatments shouldn’t either.
Maybe it’s a fanciful note of positivity to end on but, God knows, we need it,
