// PHARMATIMES AWARDS //
International Clinical Researcher of the Year Awards 2024 proved to be yet another unforgettable evening
The first International Clinical Researcher of the Year Awards happened a long time ago – in a world that, let’s be honest, is only vaguely recognisable.
Let me put that into context – in 1999 Manchester City were playing against the likes of Gillingham in the third tier of English football, your cutting-edge mobile phone was the size of Albania, we were counting down to a millennium and not everything had the prefix ‘super’. Yep, things have changed.
There is, however, something undiminished and enduringly consistent about our awards – we’re still super-excited about global excellence in an area that remains the engine room for international health across all four corners of the globe.
And, thus, the heroes of ‘clin-rez’ made the pilgrimage to The Lancaster Hotel in London town and, indeed, all continents were joyously represented.
Meanwhile, hosting duties went to Dr Oscar, one of those casual slack-wearing tv docs who imparts advice to the nation from a quasi-living room TV set.
This recent notability has propelled him to PharmaTimes Awards presentation status, jollied along by the seasoned, inimitable and peerless Alan Dedicoat. Indeed, it was the ‘voice of the balls’ that averted linguistic chaos with his peerless pronunciation of our parade of winners.The first International Clinical Researcher of the Year Awards happened a long time ago – in a world that, let’s be honest, is only vaguely recognisable.

In our game, as was the case a quarter of a century ago, there are few opportunities to really salute the scientific wizardry that electrifies our industry on a daily basis.
Thus, the evening was all about the fruition of ideas (innovation!), the satisfaction of working with cool people to reach a life-changing status quo (collaboration!) and increasingly keeping human beings involved as pivotal shapeshifters (patient-centricity!).
And make no mistake, as the years march on, there is a new reality about our industry that hitherto did not exist.
It may be the digital era, it may be the post-pandemic landscape but whatever the reasons we now have a much more approachable and transparent ecosystem, which, above all, demystifies what the life sciences does.
Perhaps this is why when our awards were presented the celebrations seemed even more deafening than usual. The thunderous yelps of a job well done, ejected seat leaps of incredible heights and the disbelieving laughter of richly deserved victories.
As sure as it did in 1999, this kind of celebration, although fleeting, forms such a vital part of the process. Why? Because tomorrow the hard work starts anew.
