What modern, inspirational leadership means at Aspire

In recent years, pharmaceutical industry leaders and their companies have faced a number of complex factors.

Healthcare reform and changes in technology, government policy and customer expectations are impacting on relationships with key stakeholders, and affecting operations, in unforeseen ways. These factors would challenge even the most seasoned leadership team.

Leaders can be true ‘change agents’ for pharmaceutical companies and pivotal to their success in improving global healthcare for society. The process of transformation requires the ability to influence, motivate and inspire others to push boundaries and seek novel solutions to unmet medical needs, while also building strong relationships.

Aspire Pharma Ltd is a life sciences business, based in the UK, devoted to delivering true value to patients, healthcare professionals and the NHS. The recent acquisition of Morningside Pharmaceuticals, Morningside Healthcare and Morningside Healthcare India in October 2022, has brought an additional set of challenges to Aspire as the company has significantly grown in number, from 51 in 2019 to around 246 team members in 2022.

Evolving trends

Adapting to the changing environment to bring innovative products to market with new ideas, ways of working, and creating value and sustainability for the product portfolio is the very essence of what Aspire has set out to achieve.

Richard Condon, CEO at Aspire says: “Throughout our organisation, we always challenge ourselves – who are our customers now, what do these customers need, and how will those needs change in the coming months and even years?”

Richard believes leadership stems from a clear vision, communicating that vision and knowing your people. Richard explains: “Our vision is simple, we help, we care and we can unite people behind that vision.

“By inspiring our workforce with a clear direction that the company is going in, we can bring them with us on the journey to be the best that they can be.”

Richard also adheres to the collaboration partnership principles that are key to addressing complex healthcare challenges. It is important to recognise the shared knowledge and resources that accelerate progress. In taking time to build open, transparent commercial relationships, these can benefit joint needs for healthcare professionals, the NHS and therefore ultimately the patient.

Pharmaceutical leaders must strive for fair access to medications, particularly in underserved regions, ensuring affordability and availability for those in need. Aspire plans to increase business outside the UK and, in doing so, the leadership team will continue adhering to an imaginative and agile approach to pharmaceutical products, exemplified by a project that is close to Richard’s heart.

“We partner with aid agencies and NGOs such as MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières), UNICEF and the World Health Organization, sourcing and providing quality medicines and medical devices for emergency aid supply,” Richard says.

He adds: “We are one of the largest suppliers of these services and have dedicated individuals who will source products and clear the paperwork to import them to challenging areas like Ukraine, working alongside aid agencies.

“We are proud to have exported to more than 120 countries globally since inception, leading the way for the pharmaceutical sector.”

Aspire’s leadership goals are simple – to create a company that makes a difference to the lives of patients through the supply of innovative products and medicines throughout the world.
